The Internet map

The map of the Internet
Like any other map, The Internet map is a scheme displaying objects’ relative position; but unlike real maps (e.g. the map of the Earth) or virtual maps (e.g. the map of Mordor), the objects shown on it are not aligned on a surface. Mathematically speaking, The Internet map is a bi-dimensional presentation of links between websites on the Internet. Every site is a circle on the map, and its size is determined by website traffic, the larger the amount of traffic, the bigger the circle. Users’ switching between websites forms links, and the stronger the link, the closer the websites tend to arrange themselves to each other.
Charges and springs
To draw an analogy from classical physics, one may say that websites are electrically charged bodies, while links between them are springs. Springs pull similar websites together, and the charge does not let the bodies adjoin and pushes websites apart if there is no link between them. Originally, all such electrified bodies (websites) are randomly scattered on the surface of the map. Springs are stretched, repulsion energy is high – the system is far from being at equilibrium. Then the websites start moving under the influence of the forces exerted and in a while come to a halt – forces of attraction now become equal to forces of repulsion, the system has reached its equilibrium. It is exactly that state that is shown on The Internet map.
Also, an analogy can be drawn from quantum physics. In this case, a website is a physical body with a finite mass, a single user is the mass quantum – the much-spoken-about, yet-to-be-found Higgs’ boson, whereas the act of user’s switching between sites is the gravitational quantum – the graviton, another hypothetical particle.
Anyway, the real algorithm of plotting The Internet map is quite far from the analogies given above. For those interested, the closest description of the mathematical model can be found in the research, and the engineering solution looks very similar to what has been described in . Google Maps engine has been used as the platform for displaying.
Semantic web
The map of the Internet is a photo shot of the global network as of end of 2011 (however, baloons show actual statistics from Alexa). It encompasses over 350 thousand websites from 196 countries and all domain zones. Information about more than 2 million links between the websites has joined some of them together into topical clusters. As one might have expected, the largest clusters are formed by national websites, i.e. sites belonging to one country. For the sake of convenience, all websites relative to a certain country carry the same color. For instance, the red zone at the top corresponds to Russian segment of the net, the yellow one on the left stands for the Chinese segment, the purple one on the right is Japanese, the large light-blue central one is the American segment, etc.

Importantly, clusters on the map are semantically charged, i.e. they join websites together according to their content. For example, a vast porno cluster can be seen between Brazil and Japan as well as a host of minor clusters uniting websites of the same field or similar purposes.
The Internet Phenomenon
The Internet global network is a phenomenon of technological civilization, and its exceptional complexity surpasses anything mankind has ever created. In essence, what we are dealing with here is a huge quantity of utterly unstructured information. The Internet map is an attempt to look into the hidden structure of the network, fathom its colossal scale, and examine that which is impossible to understand from the bare figures of statistics.

Mark Zuckerberg and Angry Birds want 10 million students to code

Yesterday, we announced the Hour of Code: a movement to recruit 10 million students of all ages to try computer science for one hour. This will be the largest initiative of its kind, ever.
Backed by Microsoft, Google, Apple, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, the Boys & Girls Clubs, and over 100 other partners, we want to bring computer science to every child, in every school, during Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 9-15).

Welcome to the 21st Century

Computer science is foundational for all students today. Yet 90% of schools don’t teach it. Fewer kids learn to program than 10 years ago.

What’s an Hour of Code?

It’s an introduction to computer science designed to demystify code and show that anyone can learn the basics. We’ll provide hour-long tutorials featuring Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Angry Birds, and Plants vs. Zombies -- for your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

How can you help?

1) Ask your local school to participate - share this handout and video with your teacher.
2) Participate yourself (or with your child). Set aside one hour to learn, during Dec. 9-15.
3) Ask your employer to schedule a 1-hour team-building event to learn together.
4) Get together a local group in your community. Or host an Hour of Code "block party."

No experience needed

We owe it to today’s students to start with one hour. Let’s make history.
Please get started now at http://hourofcode.com
- Hadi Partovi, founder, Code.org
P.S. Why are you receiving this email? You watched our video and signed the petition at http://code.org. Don’t worry, this isn’t a monthly newsletter, we’ll only send you rare, but important, updates.

Facebook Facepalm: In Big Real-Estate Buy, Mark Zuckerberg Seeks Personal Privacy, Then Removes Online Privacy feature

Two pieces of news have emerged about Facebook and privacy that might have you shaking your head. Or probably even rolling your eyes.
The social network announced yesterday that it was officially removing a feature that allowed users to control whether they could be found when people typed their name into the Facebook search bar. It was called "Who can look up your Timeline by name?" Facebook started removing the feature late last year for people who hadn't already been using it. Now, say sayonara because it's going away for good.
Translation: People using Facebook's Graph Search will be able to locate you no matter what your settings. Users can still control the audience settings for the posts they share but there is now no universal feature that allows users to opt themselves out of search.
Here's the other bit of news: As Facebook removes this privacy feature, co-founder Mark Zuckerberg is after more personal privacy -- for himself. Zuckerberg has reportedly paid $30 million to buy four homes adjacent to his own Palo Alto, Calif., home. He is said to have done this after learning that a developer was going to buy one of the properties, build a large house and then market the property as being next door to Zuckerberg.
To be fair, Zuckerberg isn't the only business leader to make dramatic real estate buys. Google co-founder Larry Page scooped up four adjoining properties to his in Palo Alto in 2009 to build a 6,000-square-foot home. Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison made waves in May when he reportedly bought two dozen beach-side properties in Malibu, Calif.
But as Facebook makes it more difficult for users to maintain privacy, its co-founder is taking drastic measures to protect his own. Ironic timing, isn't it?

The Busy Person’s 2 Step Guide To Attracting Money Using The Law Of Attraction

With money comes a whole spectrum of emotions and unwanted baggage. In a world run by money and the wealthy, it is no surprise that so many of us are hung up on the issue of ‘money’ – or in some cases, even ruled by it.
How do you feel about money and the significance that it has in your life? This is an important question that everybody ought to consider. Have you been brought up to believe that money comes freely and easily to everyone? That there is enough for everyone to enjoy? Or, are you of the mind that money is something that you have to struggle for? Something that is held back for the elite few in society or obtained through pot luck?
How we feel about money impacts exactly how we attract and experience money in our lives. It is when we harbour negative thought patterns and emotions surrounding the subject of money that we unknowingly block the way for money to come into our life. For example, do you often spend time fretting at how little money you have or feeling envious at those who seem to enjoy financial wealth? When you do these things, you are emitting an emotional frequency of ‘lacking’ and ‘want’ – blocking your path to money and attracting more of the same back into your life.
It is these complications and strong emotions that come with the subject of money, that make it such a grey area for people looking to use the Law Of Attraction to attract it. Luckily, there are several essential steps that can be studied and applied to begin successfully attracting and enjoying the wealth that you long for. However, being such a tricky subject for many people, it is important that these steps are put into practice regularly. Otherwise you might find yourself slipping back into the same old thought patterns and habits that kept you money-lean in the first place.
1. Focus On A Lifestyle, Not A Number.
It can be easy to get swept up in your desire to attract a specific sum of money, especially if you are in debt. For example, you may have £50,000 of debt that you need to urgently pay off. Focusing on this particular number may be ideal for helping you to attract it into your life (visualization tools such as a ‘Law Of Attraction’ cheque are useful for this), however, it is by far not the best course of action available.
When you choose to focus on a specific sum of money, there are two potential problems;
- Every time you think about this number, your debt will come to mind – lowering your frequency and attracting more of the same into your life.
– The key to successfully using the Law Of Attraction is having absolute desire for something. So, although you may desire to pay off your debts, your greatest desire will probably be to live a debt-free, abundant life.
So, a specific sum of money is not the answer here. It is the final big picture – a debt-free lifetime of abundance – that you want to be attracting. Not a single sum cheque.
2. Raise Your Financial Frequency.
The easiest and quickest way to begin attracting something into your life, is feeling good about it. Yes, it really is that simple! However, it is because of the complexity of our emotions towards money that raising our financial frequency proves so difficult.
Whenever you feel anxious/stressed/resistant towards money, you are creating your current situation and attracting money problems your way. So, work on transforming your attitude towards money and feel good about it. Soon, you will find money flowing into your life in abundance.
So, just how can you align your frequency with that of abundance and financial wealth?
- Keeping a gratitude journal will help you to practice feeling good about money. Every day, write down at least 5 money-related things that you are grateful for and feel good about it. I.e. ‘Thank-you for the existence of money in my life – it gives me the opportunity to buy the house/car/books/food that brings me so much joy.’ Or ‘Thank-you for the many job opportunities that come my way and make it possible for me to earn a wage.
It doesn’t matter if you are completely broke; writing these words of thanks will help you to start seeing money as your friend, rather than the enemy – raising your frequency to match what you want.
- Use affirmations. Affirmations spoken in the present tense, as though you are already living a life of abundance, are effective at aligning your emotions and frequency with that of your desired wealth. Do this and you will begin to attract more of the same; attracting new sources of wealth and income every day.
Never forget – there is more than enough money and wealth for the entire planet to enjoy! It is estimated that roughly 1% of the world’s population enjoys the majority of the world’s wealth; get clear on the facts of using the Law Of Attraction to attract wealth and slowly, bank balance to bank balance, this will be changed for the better.
